Operations

Operations Division

The Central Marin Fire Authority proudly serves the communities of the Town of Corte Madera, the City of Larkspur (including incorporated Greenbrae), and several areas of County Service Area (CSA) 31—most notably the Greenbrae Boardwalk, Lucky Drive, and San Quentin Village. These neighborhoods are nestled between the hills and canyons at the base of Mt. Tamalpais and the shoreline of the San Francisco Bay in Marin County, California.

Under the general guidance of the Fire Chief, the Operations Division is managed on a 24/7/365 basis by three Battalion Chiefs, each overseeing one of the department’s three rotating shift platoons. Whether it’s the middle of the night or a busy holiday weekend, our operations personnel are on duty and ready to respond every second of every day.

Central Marin Fire Department operates four fire stations staffed by 36 authorized operational personnel. Daily staffing includes:

  • One on-duty Battalion Chief overseeing all operations
  • Three fully staffed Type 1 fire engines
  • One Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedic transport ambulance
  • Cross-staffed specialized equipment including two Type 3 wildland engines and one Type 1 tactical water tender

Core Emergency Services

CMFD provides a full range of emergency response services, including but not limited to:

  • Structural fire suppression
  • Wildland fire suppression
  • Hazardous materials response
  • Urban Search and Rescue (USAR)
  • Vehicle and technical rescues
  • Water rescue and flood response
  • Basic and Advanced Life Support (BLS/ALS) medical services

Emergency Medical Response

CMFD responds to more than 3,400 incidents annually. Of those, approximately 2,000—or 56%—are medical emergencies. These range from motor vehicle accidents and elderly falls to childbirth, overdoses, and cardiac arrest.

All engine companies are ALS-equipped and staffed with at least one Firefighter/Paramedic, allowing for immediate advanced medical care on arrival. Our ambulance is staffed with two licensed paramedics and responds alongside engine crews to provide comprehensive care and rapid transport when needed.

Training and Preparedness

CMFD personnel participate in rigorous, ongoing training to maintain operational excellence and adapt to evolving threats. Training includes structural firefighting, wildland tactics, medical response, technical rescue, hazardous materials, and interagency coordination to prepare for large-scale incidents.

Mutual Aid and Community Focus

The department actively participates in Marin County’s mutual aid system and frequently supports regional and statewide disaster response efforts. In addition, we are deeply committed to community outreach, providing public education on fire safety, CPR, emergency preparedness, and defensible space.
